Peterborough Lions Quiz Sheets Now Available!

Peterborough Lions Quiz Sheets Now Available!

Yes, the day has finally come; Peterborough Lions Quiz Sheets are now officially available for sale.

Peterborough Lions
Fifty-Fifty Quiz

This year Peterborough Lions Club reaches the ripe old age of 50, and so our topic this year, "Fifty-Fifty" celebrates the people (and business, events, etc) who share this milestone, as well as anything relating to the number 50 itself.

This year, our primary projects are replacing our community minibus and supporting local youth projects.

For now the easiest way to guarantee getting one is via our web shop, but over coming days they will start to be available from local shops and businesses too, and a list will be made available on our website.

Anyone who would like to help us sell them is invited to contact us, whether to sell them to raise money directly for us, or on a shared "50:50" basis where half of the sale proceeds go to another great cause that you wish to support. Over £90,000 has been raised this way in past years.

Are you ready for Peterborough Lions Quiz Sheets?

Our annual quiz sheets go on sale on 1st September, and we've just got them back from the printers so we're ready and raring to go!

We'll be telling you the topic, and the reason for it, very soon now. But in the meantime we thought we'd share some of the process behind getting the quiz sheets ready each year, by answering some of the questions we're often asked.

Q1: Where do the questions come from?

A lot of people assume we buy a book of questions from somewhere and use them, but we don't. Each year a small team spends the months after the marking of the previous quiz sheet thinking up topics and questions, and tweaking them until they're happy.

Q2: So how do you pick a topic?

There's no fixed process, but sometimes a germ of an idea comes from current events in the club. For example, Heroes and Villains (2018/19) was a nod towards Peterborough Lion John Cheetham, who ran the quiz for many years but passed to higher service early in 2018 (in case you wondered, he was the hero inspiration not the villain). This year is a special year for the club and that has played a huge part in this year's topic.

Of-course it's no good having a topic without questions, and sometimes a promising topic has to be dropped if we can't come up with the questions to match.

Q3: OK, so where do the questions come from then?

Actually, we usually start with the answers and work backwards to come up with questions. Usually we can come together in our small team and generate maybe 50% of the answers in an evening to get us started, but it takes a while to get to 100, and many of them will be swapped out if we can't find a good question or the answer isn't sufficiently distinct.

Q4: How to you avoid making mistakes?

Short answer: We try very hard but we don't always succeed.

There turned out to be a glaring error one year that almost nobody noticed - almost every returned quiz having the "right" answer despite the question having been wrong. And that despite multiple proof-reads, and a select team of helpers working through early drafts of the quiz in strict confidence. Being human isn't always an asset!

Q5: How strict are you when there are mistakes in the returned answers?

We are strict, in the sense that it's unfair for someone who spells a name right to miss out on a prize to someone who spelt it wrong. But sometimes there are various correct spellings of the same word/name, or several perfectly valid answers that just aren't the ones we came up with, and those are accepted. Marking therefore takes a long time, as any answer which deviates from ours needs to be looked up and checked to see if we can accept it. And we always accept obvious corrections, but can't accept multiple answers to one question (unless they're all judged to be right).

Q6: Why do you keep it all secret until 1st September?

This is a tradition started by Lion John Cheetham that we've carried on, because we think the element of suspense adds a bit of fun. Only the small team know the questions (and answers!), and then obviously the printer; even our club president and fundraising chair are kept in the dark until 1st September.

Q7: Is it cheating if I Google the answers?

How you answer the questions is up to you! But we try to take into account that a lot of younger people might be more savvy with technology, and that might balance out having less historic knowledge. We also try to make sure some questions are too cryptic to Google, and that others are easy enough that lots of people will get them without trying.

The quiz is three things: a bit of fun, a massively important fundraiser for us, and a prize competition. We try to get the balance right across those three.

Q8: Can I help sell the quiz sheets?

You absolutely can! Every year a high proportion of the quiz sheets sold are not sold by Peterborough Lions.

There are two options. The first, if you simply want to support Peterborough Lions, is to just sell them, and pass on the money you collect to us. The second, if you have another cause you want to raise money for, is to sell them on a 50:50 basis: for every sheet you sell you keep half the money for your great cause, and we have the other half to cover printing and support our own causes.

If either option is of interest, please get in touch.

Q9: I find it hard to read the questions, my eyesight isn't great, can you help?

Indeed we can! Fitting 100 questions into an A4 leaflet means the text is quite small, so we understand this is problematic for some people.

So, available to purchase online we have an A3 version - same quiz, just twice the size.

The printing costs of the A3 version are quite high (about £1/each!), but we don't want to pass that cost on to those unfortunate enough to need them, so we only print a limited quantity each year and sell them at the same price as the standard quiz (we don't even charge extra postage). That means they are available if you need them, and this year they should also be available via RNIB on a 50:50 basis to support RNIB funds, too.

We are also trialling a new printing process this year which should improve the contrast and make the questions easier to read, even on the standard sized sheet.

Making the quiz accessible is important to us so if there's any other changes we can make please do let us know.

Q10: So what did you say this year's topic is?

I didn't, but nice try :-)

Not much longer to wait....

Peterborough Lions Community Minibus Testimonial

Update: The community minibus has now been replaced! See community minibus page
As many of you will know, during 2019 we sadly lost our community minibus to an accident and were striving hard to replace it as soon as possible.

In the meantime, we've received a wonderful testimonial from one of its regular users, 2nd Nene Scouts, an extract from which follows:

I would like to thank Peterborough Lions for your support of Scouting in Peterborough over many years.

With the use of the Peterborough Lions Community Minibus the groups that I have been involved with have been able to take Scouts (aged 10-14) Explorers (14-18) and supporting adults to the following places with minimum (fuel only) transport costs.

I hope you are able to get funding for a replacement vehicle to continue your support to Scouting and other organisations in Peterborough.

Testimonial from Greg Jones, Joint SL, Apollo Troop, 2nd Nene Scouts
www.2ndnenescouts.org.uk

The full testimonial, including details of how the Scouts have used the minibus in the past, can be found on our community minibus page.

We are very grateful to Greg for taking the time to share his experience with us and for allowing us to share them with our supporters.

If you are interested in using the minibus when it has been replaced, see the above page for more information. And if you'd like to support our fundraising efforts to replace it and give your brain a workout at the same time, why not consider buying one of our annual Quiz Sheets, which are now available online?

The Woolpack Stanground Fund Raiser

A bit short notice we appreciate but THE WOOLPACK STANGROUND are holding an all day MOTOWN music event on Saturday this week (the 27th July) with proceeds to come to Peterborough Lions Club.  Whether you are already a regular or just fancy checking out a pub new to you both Meri, the landlady, and Peterborough Lions Club will be most grateful for your support.

Meri used to run The Heron in Stanground, before the freeholders sold it off for housing.  She took over The Woolpack on the departure of the previous landlord and has invested a great deal of effort in bringing it up to scratch.  There is a lovely Beer Garden which runs down to the river, and food is on offer; why not go for Sunday lunch if you can't make Saturday.

Peterborough Lions Showtime

Peterborough Lions Showtime

Our annual Showtime is three days of fantastic entertainment at the Parkway Sports and Social Club, provided free of charge by Peterborough Lions to senior citizens and other sheltered housing residents.

Thankfully the talents at Westwood Musical Society provide the entertainment and we are mostly relegated to the kitchen to make the tea!

It was another great success and we look forward to being back next year. Thank you to Lion Gaby Sharman and her team for organising it, to everyone who helped on the night, and to everyone who helped us raise money over the past year to fund projects like this.

President's Project - Public Access Defibrillators

Peterborough Lion President Richard Willis chose for his President's Project to raise money for public access defibrillators for the Peterborough area.

The first of these is now installed and operational outside the main entrance to the Town Hall (on the wall outside the Light Box cafe and bar). This will make it accessible to a popular and busy area of the town centre at all hours.

The second is in the porch at Kingfisher Court, Stanground, where it will be available should it be needed for Kingfisher Court residents or anyone else in the local area.

The purpose of these public access defibrillators is to provide 24 hour access to life saving equipment. Should they be needed, following a 999 call for an ambulance the access code for the cabinet can be issued and guidance given on their use. Additionally, staff at local businesses in town and at Kingfisher Court will be provided with training (again funded as part of Lion Richard's project). This training is extended to members of the public with a specific need (such as a relative or neighbour at high risk of cardiac arrest). The available places are limited, please contact Lion Richard for further information.

Peterborough Lions Easter Egg Hunt and Pub Crawl 2019

It's that time of year again, where we celebrate Easter with chocolate eggs, and (optionally) a bit of a pub crawl, all for the good of local causes!

Once again we've "hidden" (see map!!) giant chocolate eggs in pubs* and other locations around Peterborough. This time, though, they're Thorton's eggs. Does that whet your appetite? The read on!

If you find one (typically on the bar or somewhere obvious), all you need to do is pick a box on the grid held in each pub (and other location), make a modest donation to great causes, and wait to see if you win. (Whether you trek on to the next location or stay put is up to you!)

Is that a hunt or a crawl? (Does it matter?)

Sometimes helping a charity means finding a poor volunteer standing in cold rain, shaking a bucket (the shaking being a natural response to the cold). But sometimes we make it easy. (No volunteers were made to suffer in the making of this fund raising campaign!)

Each egg is accompanied by a fluffy toy as second prize. Parents are free to choose whether the egg or the toy should be shared with their kids, though!

* If pubs aren't your thing, but great farm fresh food is, then we've still got you covered! Check out the list!

Itter Park fun day

On Sunday, 5th August 2018, members of Peterborough Lions Club took fun and games, including our ‘Unlock the Lion’s Cage’ game, to the Itter Park fun day. Always, it seems, very well attended the glorious weather once again brought out the crowds. The games netted a return of £110.40 for Lions’ funds, all of which will be used to support charities and good causes. The President’s thanks go to those Lions that braved the heat to run the stall and help to set it up and take it down.
